After completing her studies in California back in 2002, Sandra W. Beaver decided to move back to the East Coast to look for a career in financial services and data analytics, ultimately landing a role as a senior financial analyst at GTECH Americas in Providence.
“At the time, Jaymin [B.] Patel had recently become CFO, and he was only in his mid-30s,” Beaver said. “I remember thinking he was so young, and I hoped that I could be in a similar position someday.”
Beaver might want to consider a side job in fortune telling, as her dream has become reality. Following several positions of increasing responsibility with GTECH over the past 11 years, Beaver was named vice president and chief financial officer of GTECH Americas (one of three operating divisions of parent GTECH S.p.A.) in April.
With about 8,600 employees in approximately 60 countries – including more than 1,000 in its Rhode Island home – GTECH offers a full range of services. It manufactures leading-edge technology products across all gaming segments, including lotteries, machine gaming, sports betting and interactive gaming. The company also provides high-volume processing of nonlottery commercial transactions.
As exclusive provider of online, instant ticket and video-lottery central systems and services for the Rhode Island Lottery, GTECH’s information technology platforms and software enable distribution through land-based systems, Internet and mobile devices.
The company’s three operating segments are organized by geography – Americas, International and Italy. Each segment offers lottery, machine gaming, sports betting, commercial services and interactive games.
GTECH Americas generates more than $1.5B in revenue and holds more than 750 gaming contracts in 50 jurisdictions.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with such an amazing team, for a great company, and to take on this next challenge in my career,” said Beaver, who supports the business in all decision-making activities, with specific focus on improving profitability and cash generation from current contract portfolios.
In February 2013, when the decision was made to reorganize and rebrand the then-Lottomatica Group into GTECH S.p.A., Beaver was an integral part of the project team that managed the transition, which included a complete reworking of the support organizations and revenue-generating business units as well as a restructuring of the financial statements.
“It was a massive undertaking that was completed in an unprecedented time frame,” Beaver said.
Patel, now president and CEO of GTECH Americas, praised Beaver as an important role model for so many at the company.
“People who work with Sandra are inspired by her confidence, work ethic and commitment to excellence,” Patel said. “She is a remarkable mentor and develops her team to their fullest potential.”
The past year has presented personal challenges for Beaver. Last July, her then 2-year-old daughter, Kiley, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Kiley faces another 16 months of chemotherapy.
“My daughter’s cancer diagnosis is the most significant personal challenge I have ever faced in my life,” said Beaver. “I believe I have been changed for the better irrevocably.”
