BOSTON – The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority instituted higher fares on Tuesday, raising daily and monthly costs for commuter rail passengers from Rhode Island and southern Massachusetts.

The new commuter rail fares range from $5.75 to $11.50 for a one-way trip, depending on the distance of the station where a passenger boards the train from Boston, and are roughly 5 percent higher than the old fares. A monthly commuter rail pass will cost between $182 and $362 under the new MBTA rates.

The Providence/Stoughton commuter rail line extends south through Rhode Island to Wickford Junction in Zone 10, the zone farthest from Boston and with the highest fares. The T.F. Green Airport station falls within Zone 9, while Providence falls within Zone 8.

In Bristol County, Mass., the commuter rail stations in South Attleboro and Attleboro both fall within Zone 7, while Mansfield falls within Zone 6.
