PROVIDENCE – Manufacturing is making a comeback throughout the region, with Rhode Island in 2013 posting its first year-over-year increase in employment in the industry in 13 years, according to a report released March 17 by the Rhode Island Manufacturers Register.

On Tuesday, Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee and the Quonset Development Corporation announced that international food manufacturer Greencore USA plans to build a facility at North Kingstown’s Quonset Business Park and employ up to 400 people there.

In recognition of this growth – a 1,045-job increase in Rhode Island alone last year compared to the previous year – and the importance of this industry sector to the health of Rhode Island’s economy, Providence Business News has created a new Excellence in Manufacturing program and event on April 24 to recognize companies in the state and southeastern Massachusetts. But time is running short to apply to be considered.

The program will include 14 award categories focusing on: individual and product innovation; excellence for supply chain, domestic and international exporting, workforce development, lean management, green manufacturing and safety; overall excellence for small manufacturers (fewer than 50 employees), midsize manufacturers (50-150 employees) and large manufacturers (more than 150 employees).

There will also be awards for an emerging manufacturer (in business less than 15 years) and collaboration in manufacturing.

The April 24 event will be held at Bryant University’s Bello Center, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. Entries are due March 20, with extensions granted upon request.
