PROVIDENCE – Downtown Providence has seen significant growth in its number of new businesses in the past couple of years, the Providence Downtown Improvement District announced Wednesday.

With the release of its 2013 Downtown Business Guide, the district announced that 13 new restaurants and stores opened downtown in 2012, with five additional openings slated for the next few months.

In total, the neighborhood has seen 35 new businesses since 2011, ranging from bakeries and restaurants to jewelry and boutique clothing shops.

The rapid growth in Providence is reflective of some broader national trends, according to the report. U.S. Census projections in 2011 estimated that growth rates in cities and nearby areas surpassed those of suburbs for the first time in two decades.

In Providence, the new businesses are “a sign of the opportunity business owners see in the downtown core,” Dan Baudouin, executive director of the Providence Foundation, said in a statement. “Adding to the businesses that have long been part of our downtown, Providence is a very attractive place to be and work.”
