New career choices in The Game of Life picked by kids

PAWTUCKET – The newest version of Hasbro Inc.’s “The Game of Life” features careers chosen by children, and video game designer was their top pick.
Hasbro Inc. surveyed American children ages 8 to 12 about what they want to be when they grow up and updated the game based on their feedback.
They were asked about “modern” and “traditional” jobs they would like to have.
Traditional careers such as teacher, doctor and lawyer, which have been featured in the game since its inception in 1960, remained favorite choices, joining careers such as singer, secret agent, professional athlete, scientist, fashion designer, inventor, chef, race car driver, dancer, police officer and firefighter.
The original careers from 1960 game also included journalist and physicist.
“For more than 50years, ‘The Game of Life’ game has encouraged kids to dream about what life would be like as a grown up, including what job they’ll have,” Jonathan Berkowitz, vice president of marketing for Hasbro Gaming, said in a statement. “The survey generated a lot of great insights about what kids think about their futures and we’re excited to introduce a new ‘The Game of Life’ experience that reflects what kids’ career aspirations are today.”
In addition to shaping the new game’s career cards, the survey responses also revealed kids’ adult ambitions.
When asked what it means to be an adult, the most popular responses included not having a bedtime, having a job and not having to go to school.
Kids also had high expectations about what their future salary should be, saying they thought a good annual salary would be $249,319. On average, kids in the U.S. said their parents should be paid $437,184 just for the job of being their parent. (The average U.S. household income was $39,531 at the time of the survey, Hasbro said, citing Organization for the Economic Cooperation and Development data.)
Also, 85 percent said they want a different job than their parents, 77 percent want to be the boss when they grow up and 51 percent want to work outside.
In spring 2014, Hasbro conducted an online survey in partnership with Wakefield Research of 400 children (administered via parents) ages 8-12 in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Mexico, South Korea and Australia. The survey questioned children about career-related goals including what they want to be when they grow up, their favorite traditional job and favorite modern job, what it means to be a grown up and preferred salary.
“The Game of Life My Dream Job” game retails for $19.99.
