PROVIDENCE – New housing is expanding into the Jewelry District, with active construction of a six-story apartment and commercial building now underway on Hospital Street.
The project is unfolding at 44 Hospital St., at South Street, near the Coro building and garage owned by Lifespan. The new construction replaces a 1940s-era, two-story building that had most recently housed a nightclub.
The new development will feature 30 new apartments and street-level, storefront-style retail. The project is being developed by 113 South St. LLC in conjunction with Lifted LLC, according to a sign posted on the site.
The architect is Federal Hill Group LLC. The general contractor is Kenwood Construction Co.
The building exterior will be clad in aluminum composite panels. The panels will have a brushed, satin finish, according to architect Christopher Velleca, whose design for Federal Hill Group will include a mix of one- and two-bedroom units as well as loft apartments.
Construction began in November, after the developer obtained both building and demolition permits. In early January, work crews were completing the foundation.
