Newport Flower show<br> receives club honor

NEWPORT – The Garden Club of America has elevated the Newport Flower Show to the level of three of America’s greatest flower shows – which includes Boston, Atlanta and Philadelphia – with the designation of Sanctioned Non-GCA Major Flower Show.
The phrase “Non-GCA” references the fact that the Newport Flower Show is not sponsored by an official GCA club, but rather by an independent organization.
GCA Flower Show Chairman Laura Haley wrote, “The change reflects the growth and continued excellence of the show over the past three years. Your diligence, determination and commitment to embracing a larger, stronger flower show resulted in a stunning final evaluation endorsed by The Garden Club of America Executive Committee.”
The recognition will allow the Newport Flower Show to award GCA’s highest Flower Show awards: Certificates of Excellence in Floral Design, Horticulture, Photography and Conservation, as well as The Bulkley Medal for a Special Exhibit of exceptional merit which increases the knowledge and awareness of the viewing public. These awards are all judged by the most experienced Garden Club of America judges.
“Congratulations are due to Pat Fernandez, Candace Morgenstern and Jocelyn Sherman, who as co-chairs of the Newport Flower Show set themselves the goal of achieving this standard, and worked incredibly hard along with their many committee members to achieve it,” said Trudy Coxe, CEO and executive director of The Preservation Society of Newport County, which presents the Newport Flower Show. “This distinction is an endorsement of the quality and high standards maintained by the Newport Flower Show under their leadership.”
Established in 1995, the Newport Flower Show raises funds for the continued restoration and preservation of the Preservation Society’s 88 acres of historic landscapes, gardens and trees. The show takes place every June at Rosecliff (1901), one of Newport’s most elegant historic mansions and one of 11 historic house museums maintained by the Preservation Society.
The 2014 Newport Flower Show, with the theme “Journey: Grand Vistas,” will be held June 27-29.
The Preservation Society of Newport County is a non-profit organization accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and dedicated to preserving and interpreting the area’s historic architecture, landscapes, decorative arts and social history. Its 11 historic properties – seven of them National Historic Landmarks – span more than 250 years of American architectural and social development.
