Newport Polo Club appoints zoo as beneficiary

PORTSMOUTH – The Newport Polo Club has named the Roger Williams Park Zoo as the beneficiary of this year’s International Polo Charity Ball, “The Safari Ball.”
The Newport Polo Club hosts the annual black tie charity gala on Aug. 1 at 7 p.m. in Rosecliff, one of Newport’s legendary Bellevue Avenue mansions.
The club has selected the zoo to receive the proceeds from the gala’s silent and live auctions “to raise awareness of the importance of the conservation of the world’s endangered species and protection of their habitats,” said Jeremy Goodman, the zoo’s executive director.
He said the zoo reaches over half a million people with its environmental education programs and actively supports or directs conservation initiatives throughout New England and around the world.
Dan Keating, club president said the 14th annual ball and will honor the Kenyan Polo Team as guests using a Safari theme. The gala is the social highlight of Newport’s polo season each summer, raising thousands of dollars each year for civic and charitable causes, he said.
Weekend festivities include the ball on Friday night, followed on Saturday by the USA vs. Kenya polo match, and will conclude with a New England lobster-bake served field side at the polo grounds. Tickets to all the associated events are available online.
