Newport among most expensive destinations

BOSTON – Newport is the 13th most-expensive summer destination in the U.S., while two Massachusetts communities ranked in the top three, according to a new survey from CheapHotels.org.
The survey looked at the August hotel rates for all destinations in the U.S. and Canada.
Nantucket, the island located about 30 miles south of Cape Cod, “clearly ranks” as the most expensive destination, the company said. The community had an average overnight rate of $301 for its least-expensive double room.
Newport’s average rate was $189.
The survey pitted the destinations against each other based on the minimum price travelers will have to pay to stay in the cheapest available double room this August. CheapHotels.org said it only looked at hotels and inns with an overall rating of at least two stars and with a positive average client evaluation.
Martha’s Vineyard ranked third with an average nightly rate of $274. Provincetown, which landed at No. 9 on the survey with an average of $214 per night, makes Massachusetts home to three destinations in the top 10.
Portland, Maine, the largest city in the state, came in second with an average cost of $276 per night positions. •
