NEWPORT – As same-sex marriages get underway in Rhode Island Thursday, Newport could be on its way to becoming a top destination for gay couples looking to get hitched. The town already made a top-10 list of new destinations for same-sex weddings, published on the travel blog of discount airfare site Cheapflights.com in June.
The list highlighted Newport’s beach scenery, historic mansions and nearby vineyards in a write-up that called it an “ideal warm-weather wedding destination.” The post also cites the vibrant downtown and proximity to Boston.
“Our beautiful state is proud to be a home for many loving couples and a host to many more,” said Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee in a statement. “We appreciate this recognition of Rhode Island’s renowned tourism industry in a city emblematic of our state’s long history of tolerance and diversity.”
The list also names Camden, Maine; Seattle and Rehoboth Beach, Del., as top wedding spots that have recently legalized same-sex marriage. Internationally, the list pointed to Queenstown, New Zealand; Montpellier, France; Copenhagen, Denmark; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Montevideo, Uruguay and Saba, Dutch Caribbean.
