CONDE NAST TRAVELER readers named Newport the fifth best small city in the U.S. The publication cited the Chanler at Cliff Walk, pictured above, and the Castle Hill Inn & Resort as two of the top places to stay in the city.
NEWPORT – Readers of Conde Nast Traveler have voted Newport one of the best small cities in America for the publication’s 26th annual Readers’ Choice Awards.
The rankings, based on 1.3 million votes from nearly 80,000 readers who participated in the 2013 survey, were published last week. Santa Fe, N.M., claimed the top spot in the list of best small cities for its “art, architecture, food and crafts” reflecting Native American, Spanish and Mexican culture.
Newport ranked fifth and was the only city in the Northeast to make the list.
“The City by the Sea, at the southern tip of Aquidneck Island, is bursting with an unparalleled collection of colonial buildings, jaw-dropping Golden Age mansions (“summer cottages” for the Vanderbilts and their ilk), and long beaches,” wrote Conde Nast Traveler.
The magazine specifically cited the Chanler at Cliff Walk and the Castle Hill Inn & Resort as two of the top places to stay in the city. Both hotels were named among the best 15 hotels in New England in the 2013 Readers’ Choice Awards.
