Newport's Bluebird Cottage sells for $5.4M

NEWPORT – Bluebird Cottage in Newport, a nine-bedroom harbor-front Victorian, has sold for $5.4 million, the highest sale price in Rhode Island this year, Lila Delman Real Estate announced.

Built in 1885, the 6,000-square-foot “cottage” has hosted America’s Cup sailors over the years and Newport Jazz Festival musicians, including Count Basie, the brokerage said in a new release.

“Bluebird Cottage is a fine example of harbor-view living in Newport, Rhode Island,” said Lila Delman President Melanie Delman, the property’s listing agent. “World class sailing, rich cultural experiences, stunning beaches, and proximity to Boston and New York make Newport an ideal choice for today's affluent buyers.”

Located at 145 Wellington Ave. next to the New York Yacht Club, Bluebird Cottage features seven bathrooms, a detached garage, and a separate three-bedroom, two-bathroom guest house on a 114,000-square-foot lot, according the Lila Delman online listing for the property.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Bluebird hosted America’s Cup crews including Gretel II and Southern Cross in 1974.

“The expansive lawn was often to be seen draped with the drying sails of Cup contenders,” the news release said.

My family lived in Bluebird Cottage during 1956 and 1957 while my father was at the Naval War College. I have beautiful memories of that time and a lot a photos taken in the gardens. It is a wonderful house with lovely views. I really would like to be there again sometime.
