NEWPORT – The closed Carey School is being converted into 13 luxury condominiums.
The 118-year-old building on 32 Carey St. stopped operating as a school in 2009. It is being redeveloped by Boston-based Arch Street Development LLC, which specializes in redevelopment, adaptive reuse and historic building preservation in the Northeast.
“Downtown Newport is rich with history,” Colin O’Keeffe, co-owner of Arch Street, said in a statement. “It’s important that the new Carey Street Condominiums reflect that.”
This adaptive reuse project calls for a mix of one, two and three bedroom units that will preserve the building’s original features. The building will offer two onsite parking spaces per unit and will be within walking distance to the famous Cliff Walk, Tennis Hall of Fame and Salve Regina.
Units are being marketed by Libby Kirwin Real Estate with prices starting in the high $300,000s and averaging $450,000.
Arch Street hired Durkee Brown Viveiros Werenfels Architects, Behan Bros. Inc. as general contractor, J.A.M. Construction Co. and DiPrete Engineering, for the project.
“We’re in the process of incorporating a new ramp at the entry to the school so it is readily accessible and usable by individuals with disabilities,” Kevin Demers, DiPrete Engineering senior project engineer, said.
The project is expected to be completed by December.
