PROVIDENCE – Nine Providence Journal employees, including seven in editorial and two in advertising, have expressed interest in buyouts.

John Hill, Providence Newspaper Guild president, said on Tuesday that the nine employees submitted their names by Monday’s deadline, and that the company has until Sept. 7 to notify them if the buyouts will be accepted. The employees also have until Sept. 8 at 5 p.m. to either accept or decline the buyout offer.

Hill said most employees will be paid for 12 weeks. Employees with 20 years of service will be paid for 17 weeks. He said the company claims it is not seeking a specific number of employees to take the buyout.

In July, two Journal employees were laid off, one in editorial and one in advertising, Hill has said.

The Boston Business Journal reported Tuesday that approximately 40 people were cut in GateHouse Media’s New England group, both through the voluntary buyouts and layoffs.

GateHouse Media, which owns the Providence Journal, is owned by New Media Investment Group.
This is the second round of buyouts being offered at the Journal this year.
