Ninth annual R.I. SURF conference scheduled

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Undergraduate students of Rhode Island’s colleges and universities will present their summer research at the ninth annual Rhode Island Summer Undergraduate Research Fellows conference on July 29.
The event is co-sponsored by Rhode Island IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence and Rhode Island NSF Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research and hosted by the University of Rhode Island at the Richard E. Beaupre Center for Chemical and Forensic Sciences. RI-INBRE and RI NSF EPSCoR are federally funded programs that support and stimulate scientific research in Rhode Island’s higher learning institutions.
According to URI, the SURF conference will feature approximately 150 scientific posters on biomedical research and environmental science from undergraduate students of URI, Community College of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College, Roger Williams University, Brown University, Bryant University, Providence College and Salve Regina University.
“These students are the future Ph.D. and M.D. scientists that will drive the knowledge economy of our state,” Brenton DeBoef, URI associate professor and RI-INBRE SURF coordinator, said in a statement. “And, the research projects that these students conduct span the biomedical spectrum, from new treatments for Alzheimer’s disease to the study of environmental toxins.”
The conference is expected to bring in more than 400 faculty members, students and administrators from all over the state, according to URI.
The program will begin at 8 a.m. with registration, breakfast and poster set-up. The poster session will begin at 9:30 a.m. The conference is free to participants and attendees.
