NORTH ATTLEBORO – North Attleboro Middle School has raised more than $95,000 in a Hoops For Heart – American Heart Association fundraiser.
Held on April 30 at the school for the 16th consecutive year, the program teaches kids about physical activity and heart health. The event was organized by physical education teachers Jason Feid and John Dempsey. About 950 students participated in a basketball shooting tournament, obstacle course, dunk tank, and other fitness challenges.
The national educational fundraising program engages students in physical activity, from jumping rope and basketball skill games to tournaments, while raising money to support lifesaving heart and stroke scientific research. The program is sponsored by the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
In the last 16 years, North Attleboro students have raised more than $943,000 for the fight against heart disease and stroke – making them the top Hoops For Heart fundraiser in the country for the last 13 years.
New England Patriots cornerback Kyle Arrington and wide receiver Matthew Slater spoke to the students about fitness and working to achieve dreams and aspirations. The athletes congratulated the six students who raised the most money with a special gift bag from the team.
Assistant Principal Craig Juelis gave students incentives for their fundraising efforts, including shaving his head. Principal Victoria Ekk also pledged her support and promised to dye her hair bright red if the $95,000 goal was achieved, while Jason Feid, the physical education teacher, said for $100,000 he would be “thrown out of a plane.”
Money was still coming in at press time, but top six fundraising students were Julia Feid with $2,300, Josh Montague with $1,290, Bobby Bunstein with $1,000, Andrew Hinckley with $950, Laura Kayata with $920, and Nick Giansante with $825.
To support the school’s fundraising efforts for the American Heart Association, donations can still be made here.
