Regional consumer prices rise 1.3% in August

THE CONSUMER PRICE INDEX in the Northeast rose 1.3 percent year-over-year in August.

BOSTON - The Consumer Price Index in the Northeast rose 1.3 percent over the last 12 months, rising to 246.25 in August, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday.

The Northeast region includes the six New England states as well as New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

Nationally, from September 2011 through August, the index for all items, including the volatile food and energy prices, increased 1.7 percent to 230.38 before seasonal adjustment.

Regionally, the energy index fell 2.4 percent to 242.21 in August, the fourth consecutive month of year-over-year declines. Comparatively, the national energy index fell 0.6 percent to 250.3.

The housing index in the Northeast posted a 1 percent increase in August and the index for transportation rose 0.7 percent.
