WARWICK – Discount carrier Norwegian Airlines will start service this summer from T.F. Green Airport to destinations in Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Destinations include Cork, Dublin and Shannon in Ireland; Belfast in Northern Ireland; and Edinburgh in Scotland.

The R.I. Airport Corp. made the announcement about the new service at a press conference Thursday, noting that this is the first-ever year-round European routes for the airport. The airline is touting its bargain fares, which will be as low as $65 one way during the introductory period. The introductory travel period begins June 15 for routes to Scotland and July 1 for routes to Ireland and Northern Ireland. The introductory travel period ends Dec. 31.

“The wait is finally over for Americans who have been eagerly waiting for Norwegian to launch the cheapest nonstop transatlantic fares. Not only is the introductory fare ridiculously low at $65, but once the introductory period is over, passengers can still score a bargain fare as low as $99 including taxes on these routes,” Bjørn Kjos, founder and CEO of Norwegian, said in a statement.

Norwegian will open a base for its pilots and cabin crew and station two Boeing 737MAX aircraft at both T.F. Green and Stewart International Airport in the Hudson Valley in New York. These two new bases will create another 150 jobs, according to the airport corporation.

“As Rhode Island’s economy ramps up, major airlines are taking notice of Rhode Island’s potential. Last summer, we celebrated the return of service to the Azores. Today’s announcement from Norwegian is good news for our small businesses looking to access new markets and for working families who have expanded, affordable vacation opportunities,” Gov. Gina M. Raimondo said in prepared remarks.

Iftikhar Ahmad, president and CEO of RIAC, said he is pleased that Norwegian selected T.F. Green for the service to Europe.

“These flights are a significant addition to this airport, and they will enable more global business development and bring in more tourists to our state,” he said.

Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian said talks have been underway for some time regarding the service to Ireland. He noted recent enhancements to the airport and the interlink station that will make the airport even more appealing to travelers.

Tickets are on sale now at Norwegian.com/us, with fares from $65 one-way, including taxes.
