Nursing conference to feature Hassmiller

Posted 9/9/13

PROVIDENCE – A two-day conference on Sept. 11 and 12 about the future of nursing, sponsored by the Rhode Island Action Coalition, will feature Susan Hassmiller, senior adviser for nursing at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, at seven different events in the region.

The events are part of a nationwide campaign to establish local coalitions to help implement specific recommendations to ensure that all Americans have access to high quality, patient-centered care in a health system where nurses are essential partners.

One of the events will take place on Sept. 12, from 10 a.m. to noon, at the Malcolm and Elizabeth Chace Education Center at Women & Infants Hospital, at which Hassmiller will discuss her view of future trends in nursing and how to proactively engage in fostering these changes.

Among the programmatic goals of the national effort are:

  • Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training.

  • Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression.

  • Nurses should be full partners, with physicians and other health care professionals, in redesigning health care in the United States.

  • Effective workforce planning and policy-making require better data collection and information infrastructure.
