OSHEAN adds new members

NORTH KINGSTOWN – OSHEAN Inc. has added three new members: The Rhode Island Foundation, NeighborWorks and Rhode Island National Public Radio.
OSHEAN, a nonprofit coalition of universities, K-12 schools, libraries, hospitals and government agencies throughout the region, provides Internet-based technology services for member institutions.
As part of the OSHEAN network, the new members will become part of a framework that encourages collaboration through opportunities to share expertise, best practices and resources with other peer members.
RINPR, Rhode Island Foundation and NeighborWorks will each subscribe to IP services from OSHEAN so that they can access private peering via OSHEAN’s Enriched Internet Services. OSHEAN has the ability to keep this traffic “On-Net” for better performance and cost savings. The commercial Internet is avoided; it is simply switched through OSHEAN routers. This also enables unmetered access to resources like Microsoft Updates, Akamai and Google, according to OSHEAN.
OSHEAN collaborated with the Rhode Island School of Design, another OSHEAN member, to connect the Union Station building that houses the Rhode Island Foundation and RINPR to the OSHEAN network.
OSHEAN used “air fiber” to connect NeighborWorks’ main building to its multiple secondary connections.
“We are pleased to welcome these celebrated Rhode Island organizations to the OSHEAN family, as they bring significant resources to bear that will further expand the collaborative opportunities made possible by our members,” David Marble, president and CEO of OSHEAN, said in a statement. “It’s an exciting time to join the OSHEAN network as we continue to expand and refine our technology offerings, with an emphasis on empowering Ocean State organizations through highly advanced and affordable technology resources.”

OSHEAN operates the Beacon 2.0 state-of-the-art optical transport network and manages approximately 500 fiber miles in Rhode Island enabling its members to achieve research, improved health care services, classroom instruction and life-safety upgrades.
