PROVIDENCE – President Barack Obama approved Rhode Island’s amended request for a disaster declaration and for individual assistance in Newport and Washington counties, Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee announced.

“All of our field teams and administrative staff have been working very hard,” R.I. Emergency Management Agency Executive Director Theresa C. Murray said in a statement. “The cost to repair any storm-related damage had to be documented and calculated. Our goal is to get as much assistance for Rhode Island as possible.”

The approved amendment includes individual assistance – including the individuals and households program, disaster unemployment assistance, disaster legal service and crisis counseling – and small business administration disaster loans for Newport and Washington counties.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency will establish disaster recovery centers in order to help facilitate the individual assistance application process.
Currently, public assistance declarations have been approved for Washington, Newport, Bristol and Kent counties.
