Ocean House, Watch Hill Inn make Conde Nast Traveler’s 2015 Readers’ Choice Awards list

WESTERLY – Two hotels in Watch Hill landed on Conde Nast Traveler’s 2015 Readers’ Choice Awards – Ocean House and Watch Hill Inn.
Ocean House ranked 41st on the list of the best hotels and resorts in the world, while the Watch Hill Inn was 85th.
The Victorian Ocean House, the website states, opened in 1868. It was rebuilt in 2010 at a cost of $146 million, but much of the original design and some of the furniture was kept intact. “The word awesome barely begins to describe this Rhode Island treasure. It sits on a pristine white beach and is very private and ultra-exclusive,” according to Conde Nast.
Watch Hill Inn, a 19-suite inn, has “seemingly endless activities and classes,” according to Conde Nast, from wine tastings to tai chi. Guests also have access to both the Ocean House and the Watch Hill Inn, as they were opened by the same team, the website states.
The two local hotels joined those in locales such as Brazil, Italy, Greece, Australia, India and Mexico on the list. The No. 1 ranked hotel in the world was Singita Grumeti in Serengeti, Tanzania, featuring four permanent properties and one mobile camp, all set within 350,000 acres of land adjoining Serengeti National Park.

As for best hotels in the United States, Watch Hill Inn again made the grade, ranking 11th out of 25. Complimentary activities were noted, such as bay cruises and croquet. The Chanler at Cliff Walk in Newport ranked 18th, and Conde Naste said one of the readers described its rooms as “made for romance.”

Newport also landed on the Reader’s Choice list of the Best Small Cities in the U.S., coming in at No. 10 out of 15 cities listed. It was noted for its historic mansions and “sailboat-speckled coastline.”

Aquidneck Island came in at No. 6 out of the 10 Best Islands in the U.S., thanks in large part to the Newport Jazz Festival, which Conde Nast said visitors should “pay a visit during the summer to see the next big thing in jazz.”

Conde Nast said more than 128,000 travelers took part in the 28th annual Readers’ Choice Awards survey – the most in its history – submitting “millions of ratings and tens of thousands of comments to help us create a list of winning favorites.”
“They declared a passion for the authentic, the personalized, the unexpected – finding all three in both newcomers and stalwarts around the world,” Conde Nast said.
