WESTERLY – The Ocean House hotel in the Watch Hill section of Westerly is the only hotel in Rhode Island that received the 2017 AAA Five Diamond Award, AAA’s highest designation.

AAA Northeast made the announcement Friday.

“Five Diamond establishments represent the upper echelon of hospitality, redefining personalized service, using creativity to enhance guest comfort and providing memorable experiences,” David Raposa, AAA Northeast managing director of public affairs, said in a statement.

The Ocean House was first honored in 2011, and is part of a select group of Five Diamond establishments, AAA said.

AAA said that only 0.3 percent of the 59,000 hotels and restaurants rated by AAA receive Five Diamonds, meaning the Ocean House is one of just 120 hotels throughout North America to receive the honor.

The AAA inspector who visited Ocean House noted the seaside resort was completely rebuilt with modern amenities and repurposed artifacts.

“Numerous activities abound, including a championship croquet lawn, an onsite movie theater and cabanas at the beach with full-time professional attendants,” the AAA inspector wrote.

Three Massachusetts hotels and three restaurants also received AAA Five Diamond Awards:

Hotels

  • Four Seasons Hotel Boston, first honored in 1988
  • Mandarin Oriental Boston, 2009
  • The Ritz-Carlton, Boston, 2010

Restaurants

  • L’Espalier, Boston, 1999
  • Menton, Boston, 2011
  • Wheatleigh’s Dining Room, Lenox, 2005

AAA will recognize the Five Diamond Award winners at a luncheon in March.
