Ocean State Network for Children and Families earns accreditation

PROVIDENCE – The Ocean State Network for Children and Families recently earned accreditation from the Council on Accreditation.

“Accreditation is not only recognition of excellence, but it assures taxpayers that their investment in this approach to providing services for children and families in need is a wise one,” Malcolm Farmer, III, president of Family Service of Rhode Island’s board of directors, said in a statement.

Family Service of Rhode Island, a nonprofit statewide human service agency, also is accredited, and is OSNCF’s lead agency.

In 2012, the state Department of Children, Youth and Families established two “family care networks”: Ocean State Network for Children and Families, and Rhode Island Care Management Network.

The two networks, comprised of human service providers across Rhode Island, care for families and children in need of intensive home-based services and out-of-home placement in group homes and specialized foster care. Together, the networks serve more than 2,500 children and their families. RICMN is also COA accredited.

OSNCF has reduced the rate of youth in group homes and similar settings from 25 percent to 21 percent.

“This means that children and families are increasingly receiving care in non-institutional settings, such as their own home. This is less expensive and is associated with better long-term outcomes,” Margaret Holland McDuff, OSNCF president, and CEO of Family Service of Rhode Island, said in a statement. “Additionally, OSNCF, by providing programs that prioritize community-based and family-focused programming, has reduced the average cost of care for a child by 7 percent.”
