Office Recycling Solutions announces industry recertifications

EAST GREENWICH – Office Recycling Solutions said it recently received industry recertifications, demonstrating that it is recycling electronics equipment according to the highest industry standards for environmental protection, worker health and safety, data privacy and facility security.

The electronic waste recycler said it received its R2:2013 and Recycling Operating Standard accreditations in October.

Recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the certifications represent a set of voluntary principles and guidelines designed to promote and assess responsible practices for eWaste recyclers, according to the company.

“Used electronics are one of the fastest-growing segments of the waste stream,” Brent Mancuso, president of Office Recycling Solutions, said.

Electronics, he said in a statement, contain materials that are potentially hazardous to the environment and human health if not handled responsibly. Those materials include mercury, cadmium, lead and other metals common in electronics, as well as plastics and flame retardants, which can contaminate air, water and soil if sent to a landfill, or otherwise disposed of irresponsibly, he said, adding they can cause birth defects, cancer and other serious ailments.

Mancuso said Office Recycling Solutions is “proud to be able to offer our certified, one-stop solution to meet our customers’ needs and demands for proper disposal and data security requirements.”

The company, which was founded in January 2006, has become the largest municipal eWaste recycler in the state, Mancuso said.

It recycles all electronic items, including televisions, monitors, air conditioners, microwaves, dehumidifiers, computers, servers, keyboards, computer parts, network equipment, laser printers, routers, radios, scanners, fax machines, cellphones and telephones.

Mancuso has said that Rhode Islanders recycled between 5 to 7 million pounds of e-waste in 2013.
