Officers named for Downtown Improvement District

PROVIDENCE – The Providence Downtown Improvement District, an organization funded through fees on downtown properties, has named a new slate of officers for the next year.
Joseph R. Paolino Jr., owner and managing partner of Paolino Properties, is the new chairman. He presided over his first meeting on Aug. 18.
Steve Durkee, of Cornish Associates, is the vice chairman. Richard Lappin, of Lisco Development, is secretary, and John Rupp, of Textron, is treasurer.
The organization launched in 2005 with a mission to enhance the quality of life in downtown Providence. It employs workers who supplement city services by cleaning and beautifying the downtown, including the so-called “Yellow Jackets,” formally known as the Clean & Safe Teams, who hang flower baskets, sweep sidewalks and patrol the district on bicycle and by foot.
Paolino, a former Providence mayor, leads a family-owned and operated real estate company with extensive holdings in the city.
In a statement, he said the conditions of Kennedy Plaza and the Financial District are “unacceptable” and said his goal as DID chairman will be to strengthen coalitions that can improve the area.
“It should be flourishing, safe, civil and vibrant. With all stakeholders working together, we will make this happen.”
