PROVIDENCE – The Olneyville New York System, a diner that opened in 1946, is one of five recipients of the 2014 America’s Classics Awards presented through the James Beard Foundation by Coca-Cola.
“These honorees represent the unique American Dream of people who have created enduring, quality restaurants and food establishments that reflect the character and hospitality of their cities and community,” said Susan Ungaro, president of the foundation.
The Olneyville establishment serves food like the “hot wiener” that is distinctive to Rhode Island. Slathered with mustard and topped with meat sauce, celery salt and onions, it comes in a steamed bun with salt and vinegar french fries.
Another signature food offered at the restaurant is coffee milk, a beverage unique to Rhode Island and the official state drink, which is made by sweetening milk with syrup produced by straining water and sugar through coffee grounds.
According to the James Beard Foundation, owners Stephanie Stevens Turini and Greg Stevens have turned the family restaurant into “a multigenerational family spot, the late night haunt of college students, and the first stop from the airport for returning natives.”
The other America’s Classics winners included Hansen’s Sno Bliz in New Orleans; Nick’s Italian Café in McMinnville, Ore.; Perini Ranch Steakhouse in Buffalo Gap, Texas; and Sokolowski’s University Inn in Cleveland.
The winners will be recognized at the James Beard Foundation Awards ceremony on May 5 at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center in New York.
Established in 1990, the awards recognize culinary professionals for excellence and achievement in their fields and further the foundation’s mission of nurturing America’s diverse culinary heritage through programs that educate and inspire.
