PROVIDENCE – In anticipation of Valentine’s Day, restaurant reservation website OpenTable has ranked Providence at No. 3 on its list of the Top 25 Most Romantic Cities in America for 2014.
San Antonio, Texas, topped the OpenTable list of romantic cities, followed by St. Louis. Trailing Providence at No. 3, Atlantic City, N.J., and Oklahoma City rounded out the top five. Boston ranked at No. 16.
OpenTable determined the top 25 cities based on three variables: the percentage of restaurants rated “romantic” according to OpenTable diner reviews, the percentage of tables seated for two, and the percentage of people who dined out for Valentine’s Day last year.
“Throughout history, love, food and romance are inextricably tied together,” said Caroline Potter, chief dining officer for OpenTable. “When we looked at the connection between the number of diners seeking to share a romantic meal and the array of area restaurants offering intimate dining experiences, the data clearly pointed to these as the top cities in which desire is celebrated over dinner.”
The top restaurants in Providence – those named Diners’ Choice Winners based on OpenTable’s diner rating system – include Capital Grille, Hemenway’s, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Providence Coal Fired Pizza, Red Stripe and Pane e Vino. The Dorrance, India Restaurant and Jacky’s Waterplace Restaurant received recognition for “best ambiance” and Café Nuovo won recognition for “best food.”
Outside Providence, The Spiced Pear restaurant located inside The Chanler at Cliff Walk in Newport was recently named one of OpenTable’s 100 Most Romantic Restaurants in America. The Spiced Pear was the only Rhode Island restaurant to make the list, and one of only six restaurants in New England named.
