Optum to lay off 60 employees in April

PROVIDENCE – Sixty Optum employees will be laid off here in April, according to a notice on the state Department of Labor and Training’s website.
Optum has a call center for HealthSource RI on Royal Little Drive. It has a three-year contract with the state’s health insurance exchange and HSRI is in the midst of choosing a new vendor to operate the center, a UnitedHealth spokesman said.
However, a spokeswoman for HSRI, Maria Tocco, said the exchange has an open procurement for a contact center vendor that is currently being evaluated. She said a decision is expected soon. Ten companies bid on the contract, including Optum.
Optum, a health care technology company, is a division of UnitedHealth. Optum provides technology and consulting, and manages pharmacy benefits.
While it may seem premature for Optum to announce layoffs before the contract is awarded, federal law requires employers to give 60 days advance notice of a plant closing or mass layoff, according to information on the DLT website.
