BOSTON – Providence Business News took home three awards in the New England Newspaper and Press Association’s annual Better Newspaper Competition, including a first-place award for its 25th Anniversary special edition. The results of the competition were announced Saturday at the annual awards dinner of the organization’s conference, held at the Park Plaza Hotel in Boston.

The special edition, which was published in May 2011 to commemorate PBN’s anniversary, managed “to celebrate a quarter-century of business in Rhode Island with a comprehensive collection of people and places, communicators and innovators, notable events of commerce and community,” said the judges in the category. “This is a keepsake for another 25 years.”

In addition to the first place award in the Special Section or Editorial Supplement category, PBN took home third-place honors for General Excellence and Business/Economic Reporting.

The recognition for general excellence marked the third time in the last four years that PBN has placed among the top three weekly publications with circulation greater than 6,000, a category for which the newspaper took home top honors two years ago for its work in 2009.

Judges in the general excellence category noted that PBN “features an excellent mixture of stories and consistently good writing. … This is one of the most methodically developed publications in this contest.”

The third-place award for business writing was given for a series of stories about the long-term effects on businesses of the March 2010 floods. The judges said “PBN’s entry shows the importance of sticking with a big story long after the network TV cameras have left.”

The breaking news coverage of the March 2010 floods had garnered PBN a third-place award in last year’s NENPA competition, as well as a Publick Occurrences Award, which is awarded in celebration of the first newspaper published in the America in 1690.

The New England Better Newspaper Competition of NENPA attracted nearly 3,000 entries from daily, weekly, bi-weekly and monthly publications throughout the six-state region, with awards given in 84 advertising, editorial and promotions categories.
