PROVIDENCE – More than 600 business executives and leaders attended Providence Business News’ ninth Best Places to Work event on Thursday, June 12, a record turnout for the annual awards ceremony held at the Crowne Plaza Garden Pavilion.

The competition, held in partnership with national research firm Best Companies Group, recognizes companies – large and small – for having positive work environments and good management practices. The results and rankings are based on employee surveys and management reports. Forty-nine winners were selected this year in four categories based on number of regional employees.

In the small company category (those with 15-49 employees in Rhode Island and Bristol County, Mass.), 18 organizations were honored, with law firm Robinson & Cole LLP ranking No. 1.

Barnum Financial Group, an office of MetLife, earned the top prize in the mid-sized category for employers with 50 to 149 regional employees. A total of 20 companies ranked well in the mid-size employer category.

Among large employers with 150-499 employees, eight companies earned the Best Places to Work award, with Atrion taking the No. 1 spot.

Finally, in the enterprise category (companies with more than 500 regional employees), three companies were recognized: The Washington Trust Company, Amica Mutual Insurance and Amgen Inc., which took home the top honor in that group.

In addition to revealing the rankings of the 49 winners at the event, PBN awarded four on-site massage sessions donated by Massage Envy, and surprised attendees with a flash mob performance to Pharrell Williams’ “Happy.”

Elite Physical Therapy, Greenwood Credit Union, United Way of Rhode Island and Shawmut Design and Construction won the massage prizes based on the creative enthusiasm and noise their tables generated during a video shown at the event featuring photos over each of the winning companies.
