PROVIDENCE BUSINESS NEWS was judged to be among the top three business newspapers in the nation at the annual Alliance of Area Business Publishers editorial excellence awards program.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Providence Business News took home third-place honors as the best newspaper in the large tabloid category in the Alliance of Area Business Publishers annual editorial excellence awards program.
Judges for the award, all faculty members at the University of Missouri School of Journalism with extensive journalism backgrounds, noted that “this publication has a strong sense of place and knows its audience. It takes advantage of the sections to allow for strong inside design, not just the front cover. … [It] packs a great deal of news into a small amount of space for its readers.”
The competition awards were announced at the conclusion of the AABP’s annual summer conference on Saturday in Charlotte. Forty publications from the United States, Canada and Australia submitted 622 entries in multiple categories, with 109 awards being handed out for work done in 2014.
The award follows PBN’s receiving first place honors for general excellence in the specialty publication division in the New England Newspaper & Press Association’s 2015 Better Newspaper Competition. PBN also has been named Newspaper of the Year for two consecutive years by NENPA in the specialty publication division.

PBN took home second place honors in 2013 for best website among AABP members, which followed a 2012 second-place award for “best ancillary publication” for the newspaper’s 25th anniversary special section, and a 2011 first place award for breaking news coverage of the March 2010 floods and their aftermath in Rhode Island.
Taking home first place in the best newspaper in the large tabloid category was Crain’s Chicago Business, which was followed in second place by Crain’s New York Business.
