NATICK, Mass. – Providence Business News was named a “Distinguished Newspaper” among specialty newspapers by the New England Newspaper and Press Association at the organization’s 2016 New England Newspaper Conference, held Thursday.
The organization, which counts newspapers throughout New England as members, announced the winners in its annual Newspaper of the Year contest during a luncheon at the gathering. Twice PBN has been named Newspaper of the Year for its circulation category in the region (2013, 2014). In addition, runners-up, named Distinguished Newspaper, are named. In addition to this year, PBN was a Distinguished Newspaper in 2010 and 2012.
Last year PBN earned a “Publick Occurrences” award from NENPA, given to outstanding specific stories or packages from any news organizations in the region, for its 2014 gubernatorial and Providence mayoral election coverage. The award is named after the first newspaper published in the Americas in 1690. Last year was the third time that PBN garnered a Publick Occurrences Award, following recognition for coverage of the 38 Studios LLC bankruptcy and the March 2010 floods.
Judges in this year’s Newspaper of the Year contest noted that PBN had a “nice blend of topical news, personalized and business.”
Other comments lauded “excellent articles on current events with a business connection, with good highlighted quotes of individuals who are profiled. … Very lively paper, good topics and well written.”
“Great paper on news and articles about the state of business in Rhode Island, with good use of charts and graphs in the paper. … For someone who has a business in Rhode Island, this would be the paper for them,” judges added.
In February PBN received two first-place, two second-place and one third-place awards for mobile web application, website design and website quality, as well as for transportation and government reporting at NENPA’s winter convention.
