NATICK, Mass. – Providence Business News garnered two awards at the New England Newspaper & Press Association’s 2010 Fall Conference Thursday, taking home honors in the Newspaper of the Year competition as well as for its online and print coverage of the March 2010 floods and their aftermath.
PBN was named a “Distinguished Newspaper” – a runner-up recognition – in the Specialty Newspaper category (the Newspaper of the Year for 2010 in that category was the Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly).
At the same time, PBN was honored with a Publick Occurrences Award, named to commemorate the founding of Publick Occurrences, the first newspaper published in America (in 1690 in Boston). The award was given to 14 newspapers throughout New England for their “best work.” PBN submitted online and print coverage through May 31 of the March 2010 floods.
Other local newspapers winning recognition in the competition:
- The Standard-Times of New Bedford – Distinguished Newspaper in the weekday edition for newspapers with circulation of 22,500 to 35,000; a Publick Occurrences award for work entitled “Toxic Legacy”; and the Allan B. Rogers Editorial Award for the year’s best editorial, titled “Dial 911, get no CPR help.”
- The South County Independent – Distinguished Newspaper in the weekly newspapers with circulation of less then 5,000; and a Publick Occurrences award for its 2010 flood coverage.
- The Valley News – a Publick Occurrences award for coverage titled “Against the Odds.”
The New England Newspaper and Press Association was formed recently with the merger of the New England Newspaper Association and the New England Press Association. It represents 75 daily, 432 weekly and 45 bi-weekly or monthly publications across New England.
