PBN receives Publick Occurrences Award at NENPA conference

NATICK, Mass. – Providence Business News’ coverage of the 2014 gubernatorial and Providence mayoral elections received a Publick Occurrences Award at the New England Newspaper and Press Association’s 2015 Fall Conference Thursday.
Named after the first newspaper published in the Americas in 1690, Publick Occurrences Awards recognize outstanding individual or team efforts in journalism. This is the third time that PBN has garnered a Publick Occurrences Award, following recognition for coverage of the 38 Studios LLC bankruptcy and the March 2010 floods.
Judges for the Publick Occurrences Award noted in comments that PBN’s election coverage went “above and beyond.”
“Readers of the Business News can’t say they weren’t informed on candidates and issues. Lengthy coverage. Not just who they are, but what candidates are to do after election. Excellent.”
In 2013 and 2014, Providence Business News was named Newspaper of the Year for specialty newspapers at the NENPA Fall Conference, an award given for overall excellence. In addition, PBN was awarded first place for general excellence for a specialty publication in NENPA’s 2015 Better Newspaper competition, given out in February.
No other newspaper in Rhode Island or Bristol County, Mass., received a Publick Occurrences Award in Natick this week. However, a number of local publications were recognized as “Distinguished Newspapers” by NENPA in different circulation categories:

  • The Taunton Daily Gazette, daily newspaper with circulation of less than 10,000
  • The Newport Daily News, daily newspaper with circulation of 15,000-25,000
  • The Sunday Standard-Times, of New Bedford, Sunday newspaper with circulation of less then 20,000
  • The North East Independent, of North Kingstown, for weekly community newspapers with circulation of less than 4,500

In addition to the awards given to news organizations, the association gave out individual honors at the conference, including the AP Sevellon Brown New England Journalist of the Year to Michelle R. Smith of the Associated Press’ Rhode Island bureau for her series about Vincent A. “Buddy” Cianci Jr. as he ran to become mayor of Providence for the third time.
