BOSTON – Providence Business News was awarded first place for general excellence for a specialty publication on Saturday at the New England Newspaper & Press Association’s 2015 New England Newspaper Convention.
The win represented the second time in the last six years that PBN was recognized for general excellence in NENPA’s annual Better Newspaper Competition and the sixth time in the last seven years that the newspaper was recognized as one of the three best newspapers in the region for its circulation category. In addition, in the fall PBN was named New England Newspaper of the Year for specialty publications for the second consecutive year by NENPA.
PBN also took home second prize for Best Overall Website for a weekly newspaper with circulation greater than 6,000 and third prize for Website Design for weekly newspapers for PBN.com.
Judges for the NENPA competition praised PBN’s print edition for “clean layout with strong, unbiased reporting.”
They added that the newspaper has a “great op-ed section. Loved the Manufacturing Awards supplement. Providence Business News is a business publication for CEOs and the common man.”
Judging for general excellence was based on two complete issues, PBN’s April 28 and May 12 editions. The April 28 edition also included the special section from last year’s Manufacturing Awards competition.
Judges for the Best Website and Website Design said that PBN.com “provides a satisfying reader experience for anyone interested in what is happening in Providence and Rhode Island business and the things that affect it. It’s a large site and they have done a good job of making it as easy to use as possible, given the breadth of information.
“This is a solid business site. There is a lot of content, but it is easy to navigate. The ads are appropriate to the audience and not distracting.”
Two years ago, PBN.com was named the second-best website in the nation among members of the Alliance of Area Business Publications. That year PBN.com also was cited for best website design in NENPA’s Better Newspaper Competition.
The year’s competition drew more than 3,200 entries from daily, weekly, bi-weekly and monthly publications throughout the six-state region. The competition was judged by 53 industry veterans and academics, with awards given in 71 editorial categories in both digital and print divisions.

  1. The news media is giving themselves awards for leaving out information. It is well known on Social Media about the New Bedford ocean wind turbine fiasco and the lease to Cape Wind. Massachusetts is 765 million in debt over poor infrastructure spending on green energy projects

Folks, Hundreds of millions of dollars of infrastructure money has gone into the New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal. The hurricane gates only allow ships up to 83 feet wide which can’t be used for ocean wind turbine barges. The project has turned into a financial fiasco!
Massachusetts has evidently arrived at a point in its legal culture where no negative consequences seem to exist for misleading the public
