PBS Alzheimer’s disease documentary to air

PROVIDENCE – The Alzheimer’s Association will serve as a national partner for the PBS documentary “Alzheimer’s: Every Minute Counts,” which will premiere Jan 25 at 10 p.m. local time.

The program highlights the significant and growing burden of Alzheimer’s disease in this country. An estimated 5.5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease, 23,000 of whom are living in Rhode Island. The national number is expected to nearly triple by 2050 if a treatment is not found, the Alzheimer’s Association reported.

According to the nonprofit organization, Alzheimer’s is the nation’s most expensive disease and future costs threaten to bankrupt Medicare, Medicaid and the life savings of millions of Americans, the agency reported. Should the number of patients increase as projected in the coming years, costs to care for them will exceed $1 trillion.

The complex issues and challenges depicted in this documentary are those that families here in Rhode Island face. The Alzheimer’s Association, Rhode Island Chapter can provide state-specific information on the emotional toll of Alzheimer’s disease, the stories of people living with the disease and of their caregivers, the disease’s economic and financial challenges associated with the disease and local support and services available to help families.
