PROVIDENCE – Providence College’s School of Business has earned initial accreditation from the board of directors of The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the college announced Wednesday.

“I expect the accreditation to serve as a catalyst that will propel us forward to a higher level of academic achievement and ensure that our students are equipped to compete in today’s global economy,” PC president Father Brian J. Shanley said in a statement.

The PCSB was established in 2007 and offers undergraduate programs in accountancy, finance, management, and marketing, and a graduate MBA program.

PC said the accreditation process, during which the school developed and implemented a plan to meet quality standards, brought PCSB a developed common core curriculum, better educational assessment, additional students, a stronger MBA program, and the formation of a business advisory council.

The school will be subject to a maintenance review every five years. Additional PCSB improvements are planned, including the eventual relocation to a new facility.

“Achieving AACSB accreditation is not an event in time, but apart of a continous process of quality improvements that will ensure an excellent business education at PC and allow the College to attract and retain the best faculty,” said Hugh F. Lena, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs.

The AACSB was founded in 1916 and is the longest serving global accrediting body for business schools that offer bachelors, masters, and doctorate degrees in business and accounting.

Approximately 30 percent of college business programs in the United States have achieved AACSB accreditation.
