PROVIDENCE – Providence College has reached its $140 million fundraising goal a year early.
Steven J. Maurano, Providence College spokesman, said on Thursday that several monetary gifts were received by the college in recent weeks, which collectively put PC “well over the $140 million mark.” The total amount is still being tallied, he said.
Gregory T. Waldron, the college’s senior vice president for institutional advancement, said in a statement that passing the $140 million goal is a “milestone for us, but it is not our end point.”
“Rather, our success has convinced us to move forward and continue to build on our institutional momentum. We are heartened by the support we have received to date, and we will work diligently to invite our community to bring this campaign to even greater heights as we prepare to celebrate the college’s centennial next year,” Waldron said.
Funds will be used to support student scholarships, improve academic facilities and programs, further advance the institution’s Catholic and Dominican mission, and increase the annual fund. The college also will focus on growing its endowment, which provides scholarship aid for students and supports other initiatives, and will continue to offer additional financial aid.

College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, in an email to members of the Providence College community earlier this week, discussed what he called a “milestone worth celebrating” and said he was grateful to everyone who donated.
The college, he said, started the comprehensive campaign, “Our Moment: The Next Century Campaign for Providence College,” five years ago, formally launching it in 2014. At that time, Shanley said the “quiet phase” of the campaign had raised $99 million, and the plan was to raise another $41 million by 2017.
He said the campaign was intended to be a six-year effort, ending with the centennial year of 2017.
“While the original goal has now been met, the ‘Our Moment’ campaign will continue for another 15 months, and we are inspired to build upon this momentum to reach a total that will amplify the transformative impact the campaign has had already,” Shanley wrote.
