PPAC announces 38th Broadway season

PROVIDENCE – The Providence Performing Arts Center has announced its 38th Broadway season, which will open with Disney’s “Newsies” in October.

“Newsies,” which is a musical about underdogs who become unlikely heroes when they stand up to powerful men in New York, is part of the Taco/White Family Foundation Broadway Series, which also includes “Cabaret,” “Pippin,” “The Sound of Music,” “Motown the Musical,” “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas” and “If/Then.”

“Newsies” will be shown Oct. 20 to 25.

The Encore Series features return engagements of “Annie” (Dec. 29 to Jan. 3, 2016)) and “Ragtime the Musical” (April 8 to 10, 2016), as well as the Providence premiere of “Bullets Over Broadway” (May 31 to June 5, 2016).

“The Book of Mormon,” which played a two-week run in 2014, will return Nov. 17 to 22, while “Jersey Boys” will return April 26 to May 1, 2016.

PPAC Director Cindy Laughlin said PPAC will present a number of Broadway productions that will make their Providence premieres at the theater, including “Motown the Musical” and “If/Then.”

Other dates are as follows:

  • “Motown the Musical,” Nov. 3 to 8, about Motown founder Berry Gordy’s journey from featherweight boxer to heavyweight music mogul.
  • “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas,” Dec. 8 to 13, about a song-and-dance team putting on a show in a Vermont inn and falling for a sister act in the process.
  • “Cabaret,” from Jan. 26 to 31.
  • “Pippin,” from Feb. 16 to 21, featuring acrobatics, magical feats and songs.
  • “The Sound of Music,” March 9 to 13. Macy’s family night at “The Sound of Music” will be March 10 at 7:30 p.m. Buy a regularly-priced ticket and receive one ticket of equal value for a child 18 or younger.
  • “If/Then,” from June 14 to 19, 2016, a contemporary Broadway musical about living in New York today – and all the possibilities of tomorrow.
