PPL earns Better World Books award

PROVIDENCE – The Providence Public Library has earned one of three national awards from the annual Better World Books/National Center for Family Literacy Libraries and Families award which includes a $10,000 grant which the library will use to implement outreach initiatives through its Chace Children’s Discovery Library.
“This grant will help us promote a love of reading in young children and give parents the tools they need to help their children become successful readers and learners,” said Karis Tashjian, literacy program coordinator for the Rhode Island Family Literary Initiative, which is based at the library. “This outreach also will help reduce the language development differences between children from lower and higher income families.”
The Chace Children’s Discovery Library features hands-on activity centers and is focused on key elements of early childhood literacy development. The outreach plan will be designed to engage immigrant families.
In addition to the grant, the library received scholarships to attend the National Conference on Family Literacy that recently took place in San Diego, Calif.
Better World Books and NCFL have given the awards out for three years and together have raised more than $838,000 for NCFL’s programming since 2005.
