PPL offers free architectural tours

Posted 7/19/13

PROVIDENCE – Providence Public Library will offer guided architectural tours of its historic library building beginning on Aug. 6.

The free tours will be held on the first and third Tuesday of each month beginning at 10:30 a.m. from the library’s grand entrance at 225 Washington St.

The library opened its classic Venetian Renaissance building in March 1900. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the library is a prime example of turn-of-the-century (Gilded Age) American architecture.

“By restoring the building’s original spaces and making them available for community use, the library is honoring and renewing the spirit of our unique and historic building so it continues to inspire and uplift those seeking opportunities for lifelong learning and to gather with community,” said Communications Director Tonia Mason.

Members of the public are invited to visit and learn about this architectural gem, along with the library’s unique and special holdings and collections, including the Rhode Island Collection.

Group tours outside of these days/times are also possible. To schedule a special group tour, contact Mason at 4014558090 or, or access the library’s annotated online tour at (Library Tour).

At the main, 150 Empire St., entrance, regular library hours are Monday & Thursday, 12:30-8:30 p.m.; Tuesday, 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.; Friday, 12:30-5:30 p.m., and Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
