Paiva Weed to receive Brighter Futures Award

PROVIDENCE – Family Service of Rhode Island will present R.I. Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed with the nonprofit’s 2014 Brighter Futures Award on Oct. 30.
The award, made annually to an individual or organization making an outstanding contribution to the well-being of children, will be given out at a noon luncheon at the Rhode Island Convention Center.
Weed, of Newport, is the first Aquidneck Island resident to receive the recognition in the award’s 10-year history. A state senator since 1992, she became the first woman to be elected president of the state senate in 2009.
“These last few years have not been easy for state governments,” said Family Service of Rhode Island CEO Margaret Holland McDuff. “Severe budgetary constraints have affected states across the country. Through even the most difficult times, President Paiva Weed has acted as a true champion for Rhode Islanders in need, with a record of accomplishments that includes working for affordable housing, reforming the child welfare system, providing compensation to victims of violent crime and much more.”
Weed said she is humbled to receive the award.
“This award is made particularly special because of the high regard in which I hold the dedicated providers, educators and other professionals affiliated with the agency, and the many child and family service professionals throughout our state,” she said. “They work tirelessly each day to meet the needs of families in the community, and they are effectively helping people live more full and independent lives.”
Past recipients include Rhode Island Education Commissioner Deborah A. Gist; Geoffrey Canada, president and CEO of the Harlem Children’s Zone; U. S. Senator Jack Reed; and the Boston Red Sox, the Red Sox Foundation and the Pawtucket Red Sox.
Seats at the Brighter Futures Luncheon are available for $150 online at http://www.familyserviceri.org/ or by calling 401-519-2274. The luncheon is a fundraiser for the statewide human service and education agency.
