The Providence Mutual Fire Insurance Co. is no stranger to this award. This is the company’s fifth year in a row being named one of the Best Places To Work by Providence Business News.
The Warwick-based company was founded in 1800 and is the fourth-oldest mutual insurance company in the nation.
Providence Mutual employees work hard and play hard. The company sponsors many parties for its staff. It has an annual Halloween party with a costume contest, trivia and a scavenger hunt, among other festivities. It celebrates Millard Fillmore day with ice cream sundaes, Pi day on March 14 with a pie-baking contest and football season with tailgating parties. Employees also look forward to chili cook-offs, Olympic parties, a holiday party, a May breakfast and other festivities.
In addition to fun and games, the company offers its employees an expansive benefits package. Many of the benefits are completely funded by the company, including dental and life insurance.
Employees are eligible for a profit-sharing program and a holiday bonus.
Providence Mutual partners with Project TRAIT (Teaching Responsible Adults as Insurance Technicians) through Rhode Island College. The program provides internships to adults who are trying to enter the insurance industry. Two of these internships have led to full-time employment.
The company also has an annual United Way campaign. It is kicked off when they have their Halloween party.
Florence Gobin, the human resources supervisor, believes that providing these and other perks for employees helps everyone.
“It benefits the employees, it benefits the company, it’s a win-win,” she said. •
