EAST PROVIDENCE — The Narragansett Council of the Boy Scouts of America hosted its annual Distinguished Citizens Award Luncheon at The Omni Providence hotel on Thursday, awarding this year’s Sen. John H. Chafee Distinguished Citizens Award to Jaymin B. Patel, president and CEO of GTECH Corp., and the late Edward J. Cooney, former senior vice president and treasurer of Nortek Inc.
Cooney passed away on March 20, at the age of 65.

“The recipients this year have both served as role models for our community and our youth,” John Mosby, Narragansett Council’s scout executive and CEO, said in prepared remarks, adding that the council recognizes community leaders “whose accomplishments and lives personify the Scouting principles and values.”
The Distinguished Citizens Award is named after the late Sen. John H. Chafee. Chafee, a scout himself and a distinguished Narragansett Council alumnus, was said to have kept a copy of the Scout Handbook in his Senate office.
Proceeds from the awards luncheon, which was chaired by Gilbane Inc. Vice Chairman Paul J. Choquette, will help fund the Narragansett Council’s Urban Scouting Program. The program seeks to serve the needs of at-risk, urban youth through enrollment in Cub Scouting and Boy Scouting. Funds raised will go toward uniforms, program supplies and equipment, insurance, summer scholarships and providing paid staff to serve as cubmasters and scoutmasters, among other needs.
Past recipients have included Ted Almon, chairman and CEO of Claflin Co.; Joseph J. MarcAurele, chairman, president and CEO of Washington Trust Co.; and Robert A. DiMuccio, president, chairman and CEO of Amica Mutual Insurance Co.
