Patrick OKs Mass. casino bill

Posted 11/22/11

BOSTON – Gov. Deval Patrick signed the bill legalizing casinos in Massachusetts on Tuesday morning, The Boston Globe said.

The bill, approved by lawmakers last week, allows three full-scale casinos and one slot machine parlor.

“Now the work will turn to getting it right in the implementation,” Patrick said as he put his signature on the bill just after 10:30 a.m. at the Statehouse.

Massachusetts is the 40th state in the country to legalize casinos and slot parlors.

The slot parlor could take as little as a year to open, while the casinos may take between three to five years, the newspaper said.

The question now is where the casinos will be located. The bill allots one in each of three areas: Boston area to Worcester; Western Massachusetts; Southeastern Massachusetts. The slot parlor can open anywhere in the state.

Developers will be chosen by a 5-member state gambling commission that also will set up regulations, including the rate slot machines will have to pay out, the newspaper said.
