PawSox continue charitable legacy in 2016

PAWTUCKET – For the past 12 years, the Pawtucket Red Sox have made six-figure contributions to their Pawtucket Red Sox/James J. Skeffington Charitable Foundation and 2016 was no different as they donated more than $100,000 to the community.

PawSox Chairman Larry Lucchino prioritized charitable giving at his previous baseball clubs, including the Baltimore Orioles, San Diego Padres and Boston Red Sox, and applied his philanthropy to Rhode Island when he joined the PawSox team.

“One of the greatest assets of a professional baseball team is its power to raise funds, do good deeds large and small, and make a real difference in the city, the state and the region,” he said.

The PawSox Scholars Program, which will award two eighth-graders $10,000 college scholarships if they maintain good grades and behavior, was the largest commitment made this year by the team. The two eighth-graders are Charlisa Kollie, a 13-year-old from Pawtucket’s Samuel Slater Junior High School, and 14-year-old Ethan Hoke of Dr. Earl Calcutt Middle School in Central Falls.

In addition to efforts in education, the PawSox Foundation also focused its philanthropy on veterans’ care and children battling cancer through its “In Debt to a Vet” program, the Tomorrow Fund, the Make-A-Wish Program and, more locally, the Pawtucket Boys and Girls Club.
