PAWTUCKET – Pawtucket residents can apply to get trees for their sidewalks from the city for free, the city announced Tuesday.

The city’s new program to bring trees to the sidewalks outside city residents’ homes replaces a shared-cost tree program that had mixed results, according to a release.

“Trees are not only good for the environment, they also brighten the city streetscape in so many ways,” Mayor Donald R. Grebien said in a statement. “We’re hoping that by broadening the program we will encourage more participation.”

Residents can choose to plant Chinese Elm, Bowhall Red Maple, Littleleaf Linden or London Plan Trees. For trees to be planted under power lines, the choices are Chanticleer Pear and Japanese Zelkova.

Applications for next spring’s round of plantings are open until Dec. 1 through the Department of Public Works. The program is funded under the city’s federal block grant program.
