SALVE REGINA UNIVERSITY'S Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy has named its inaugural group of undergraduates to a leadership development program, the Nuala Pell Leadership Program in Public Service.

NEWPORT – Salve Regina University’s Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy has selected 12 sophomores for leadership development training in the upcoming academic year through the Nuala Pell Leadership Program in Public Service.
This inaugural group of fellows, who are all members of the Class of 2017, will receive leadership development training during the 2014-15 academic year at Salve Regina. They will participate in 60 hours of seminar instruction on leadership challenges facing effective leaders and undertake a community service project.
The program is named for the late, long-time university trustee and honorary degree recipient who was the wife of Sen. Claiborne Pell, Rhode Island’s longest serving senator. Nuala Pell helped design the program.
“Anyone who was blessed to know Nuala knows the gentleness of her spirit and the dignity with which she treated everyone she met,” said Salve Regina President Sister Jane Gerety. “We believe the grace she embodied in her life is essential to effective leaders today, and we’re delighted that the Pell Center is home to this initiative.”
The new fellows include Uma Chapagain of Worcester; Lauren Cronshaw of Barrington, N.H.; Caitlin Downing of Dighton, Mass.; Giana Fazzino of East Haven, Conn.; William Humes of East Rockaway, N.Y.; Julia Morisi of Longmeadow, Mass.; Mary Pawlusiak of Mashpee, Mass.; Dan Regan of Westford, Mass.; Garrett Rupe of Peckville, Pa.; Shauna St. Pierre of Barnstable, Mass.; Kyle Wells of Niskayuna, N.Y.; and Dakota Williams of Palmdale, Calif.
Pell Center Executive Director Jim Ludes said the hope is that the program will be “transformative” for these students.
“This generation of young Americans will have to address a long list of challenges — from a changed climate to demographic and resource shifts that will challenge the familiar and the comfortable,” he said. “As a nation we will need leaders committed to service to meet these challenges head-on. We’re thrilled that the Pell Center can honor Mrs. Pell while at the same time contributing to the public good for years to come.”
The Pell Center is a multi-disciplinary research center that promotes and studies good governance, public engagement and effective leadership at home and abroad.
The program will be delivered by the core staff of the Pell Center and members of the university faculty. Outside speakers will participate in seminars.
