MIDDLETOWN – During the week of Aug. 20, People’s employees donated and delivered more than 100 backpacks filled with school supplies to local students at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in Newport, Reach Out LLC in North Kingstown and Good Neighbor Kitchen in Bristol.
This is the seventh year People’s has done this project for local children. People’s Credit Union was able to donate almost double the amount they were able to last year.
The backpack drive was coordinated through the Credit Union’s Community Enhancement Committee. The Credit Union raised money through dress down days throughout the summer to buy the backpacks and school supplies for the students. Local businesses, including Staples, also donated supplies for the drive.
“So many students in the communities we serve are in need and go without the necessary school supplies. We are happy we can once again help make their school year a better one,” said Tracy Glover, chairwoman of the committee.
People’s Credit Union serves members through six locations in Bristol, Middletown, Newport, North Kingstown, Portsmouth and Wakefield.
